What is Dewey?

Dewey is the platform for providing academics access to high-quality third-party corporate data for use in research. Our mission is to make it easier for academics to conduct and publish research by unlocking previously inaccessible datasets.

How does it work?

Dewey works with leading corporate and third-party data providers to bring their datasets to the academic market. We manage all vendor communications and licensing so academics can focus on performing groundbreaking research. The scale of Dewey’s community gives these data companies a single, straightforward outlet for reaching the academic market, enabling us to keep the cost for our end users low. Because of our model for working with vendors, Dewey is typically the most affordable way to access data from these companies.

Through the Dewey platform academics can easily browse unique datasets from a wide variety of providers to augment research and curricula with new insights, all in one place. Researchers and students can also join our public community to collaborate with over 15,000 academics already using third-party data in their research. Think of Dewey as your university’s own library of corporate data, complete with resources to ensure your faculty and students are successful.

What are group subscriptions?

Dewey provides individual subscription options for Faculty and Students, but we also work with university groups of any size that want to provide multiple users with valuable data access. Group subscriptions can cover any number of users and user types with a single license.

Examples of a group subscription could include:

  • a Business School library enabling all of their faculty to access the data on the Dewey platform;
  • a specific department within a university providing access to data on the Dewey platform for all students enrolled in their courses;
  • a research lab at an academic institution leveraging data from Dewey to augment their studies;

and other similar situations. If you’re unsure which option is best for you, reach out and we’ll be happy to help you find the right fit

If existing individual subscribers end up being included in a group subscription, we’ll gladly refund their subscription.

Benefits of group subscriptions over individual subscriptions

There are a few main benefits to using group subscriptions. We understand that not every researcher will need to actively use research data on a regular basis, so group subscriptions are not on a “per seat” model. We want researchers to be able to access the platform when they need it, and not worry about unsubscribing during times of inactivity. Therefore, group subscriptions are significantly discounted compared to the sum of individual subscriptions.

The second significant benefit is that you can improve shareability and collaboration among your university group. Based on our licensing terms with data vendors, each user of data from the Dewey platform must have a unique account. This includes co-authors, research assistants, and students working with faculty members. Group subscriptions are a simple way to encompass all potential collaborators under a single license.

Group licenses also prevent researchers from using their personal or discretionary budgets on data access.

Benefits of subscribing to Dewey as a department or library admin

Subscribing to Dewey enables department and library admins to provide more research and learning opportunities to faculty and students. Dewey partners with leading vendors to remove barriers to accessing data, helping admins connect their departments and libraries with never-before-used datasets that most researchers cannot access.

Additionally, connecting departments to the Dewey community is a great way to generate buzz about your university’s research among top data scientists, and can serve as an educational and networking tool for students.

“Getting access to new and unconventional datasets has completely changed the direction of my research pipeline. Getting access to them on a platform designed for academics is icing on the cake." - Nicholas Hallman, Assistant Professor, University of Texas at Austin

Using Dewey vs. managing corporate data vendors

Typically, researchers and university admins are forced to work directly with multiple corporate data vendors in order to get access to data. This is often a time-consuming and complicated process. Dewey is an alternative to that.

By subscribing to Dewey, researchers and university admins can:

  • offload the time-consuming work of interacting with individual data vendors and navigating data usage agreements;
  • eliminate the technical integration of multiple vendors, bringing data delivery and access into one place;
  • reduce the time researchers spend on grant proposals and expedite the path to conducting actual research;
  • take advantage of the scale of the Dewey academic community to get competitive group pricing on data.

In fact, because of the scale of our audience, Dewey can occasionally strike deals with corporate data providers who don’t work with individual researchers, labs, or universities. If you request a data provider to be added to the platform, we’ll try our best to add them to the platform.

Getting started

If you’re ready to get started or want to learn more about group subscriptions, simply fill out the form on the group access page and let us know a bit more about the group that’s interested in access.

Once you’re ready to move forward, we’ll work with you to roll out access to the Dewey platform to all of your users.

Happy researching!
