An Introduction to Dewey Subscriptions

Academic research is easy… said no one ever.
But, it at least shouldn’t be difficult to access the data you need to push your research efforts forward.
Dewey was born because we realized that accessing valuable datasets for academic research has historically been a broken and challenging process. Researchers spend too much time searching, negotiating, and licensing, yet still often fail to get their hands on quality data. So, we took it upon ourselves to fix it by managing these steps for you.
We operate on a subscription basis, with varying subscription types to accommodate both individual researchers and research teams.
In some ways, this is a unique model for the academic research market, so we put together this primer to answer the most frequently asked questions we receive.
Overview: Why subscribe to Dewey Data?
Dewey Data subscriptions unlock access to data from an ever-growing list of corporate data providers. Our database includes products on corporate finance, real estate, public policy, workforce management, marketing, urban planning, GIS, behavioral economics, weather, and much more.
We manage all communications and licensing directly with our data partners, giving them a single, straightforward outlet for reaching the academic market. Because of our model for working with vendors, Dewey is typically the only, and the most affordable, way to access data from these companies for academic research purposes.
Subscribers can easily browse through our vendors’ products and can even combine datasets from multiple vendors for enhanced analysis, all in one place and for one flat fee. Researchers and students can also join our public community to collaborate with over 15,000 academics already using third-party data in their research.
What’s included in your subscription
Datasets from 20+ of our data partners are included in all Dewey subscriptions, even if on an academic discount. We also have some datasets that are not included in a subscription but are available for purchase. You can see if a product is included in your subscription or available for purchase on the product listing.
A complete list of our data vendors and what is included with our subscriptions can be found here.
We’re constantly adding new data partners to our platform, so another benefit of subscribing is that the number of datasets you have access to will continue to grow over time!
Choosing your Dewey Data subscription type
Our three subscription plan types are designed to meet your unique research needs, whether you’re an individual researcher or responsible for your entire university’s data licensing.
Subscription options
Anyone can create a starter account completely free. This is perfect for those who are new to our platform and would like to simply browse the available data, download samples before subscribing, or utilize the free and public data products. You’ll have access to our community board, free data samples, ad-hoc data licenses, and public and company-submitted datasets.
The individual subscription is designed for researchers. For $150/mo., users receive all the features of the starter account, plus unlocked access to subscription data, automatic data updates, options to collaborate with other subscribed researchers, and the ability to publish research with included data.
Our most common subscription type is the research team subscription. This is the best solution for research teams with multiple co-authors. All the features of the individual subscription are included, plus discounted group access, publishing rights for co-authors, access for research assistants and students, and data sharing and collaboration abilities. Pricing starts from $300/mo., depending on team size. Refer to our pricing page for more details.

Large groups
If you’re interested in licensing Dewey for multiple teams, our large group option can provide coverage for entire departments, research labs, or classrooms that would like access for multiple users. We will work with groups of any size to find the best solution for your whole team.
For large groups, we can even work directly with the library to offer university-wide access to the Dewey platform. This enables us to integrate single sign-on (SSO) and build internal resources to help educate university researchers on the data we have available (example).
To learn more, get in touch with us through this brief form and tell us a little bit about your group.
How do I choose the correct team size?
Users cannot share data from our platform with other researchers unless they are included in your team or group license. This means that you’ll want to ensure that all co-authors of your research are covered in your subscription, not just the person accessing or working with the data. Our research team and large group options allow you to have cross-departmental and cross-university researchers on your team. If you ever have any doubts about who needs coverage, you can always contact our sales team to check.
Subscription terms and cancellation
Subscriptions can be canceled at any time. However, it’s important to understand that Dewey subscriptions are licenses to access data, they are not purchases of data. Your “term” or “permitted use” with the available datasets is contingent upon remaining subscribed.
To proceed with cancellation, you’ll need to acknowledge the following with a Dewey team member:
- I'll lose access to the subscription datasets on the Dewey platform
- I've deleted all copies of the data accessed during my subscription term
- I can no longer continue to use data accessed during my subscription term for any research unless it has been accepted for publication and I've notified the Dewey team
That being said, we understand the research lifecycle is long, and oftentimes you’ll need to retain a copy of the data for multiple years to successfully publish a paper.
To store a copy of any dataset post-term, you must have a paper accepted for publication and submitted to info@deweydata.io before your term ends. You can only store a copy of the data used in this research and that data can’t be used for any other research.
Working papers and published work
Do you have any research in progress or something you’ve just published? Let us know!
We’d love to help you spread the word about your research and show our data partners how academics are using their data. Even if it’s just a working paper, please do keep us updated!
